K-9 Phoenix and handler Deputy Joshua James met Commissioners at a recent meeting, giving a demonstration, before a quick nap.
(SANILAC COUNTY) – The Sanilac County Board of Commissioners had their bi-weekly meeting Tuesday afternoon and took care of business in short order. The Board approved the purchase of a new mobile radio for the Drug Task Force team that will be mounted in the patrol vehicle that carries the Sanilac County Sheriff Department K-9 unit. Commissioners agreed to spend just over $7,200 dollars for the radio and another $250 dollars for a programming fee.
Funding for the purchase comes from the DTF millage money. At their last meeting, Commissioners enjoyed a special guest when K-9 Phoenix and his handler Deputy Josh James gave a special presentation. The dog is specifically trained to sniff out meth and not a marijuana dog, as others have been in the past. Deputy James said in nine recent calls for service with the K-9, seven proved to be positive hits on meth leading to arrests.
Phoenix gave a demonstration on voice commands before entertaining Commissioners and guests when he decided it was time for a belly rub and a nap.
In other Commissioners news, during the public comment portion of the meeting, Marlette resident Lisa Griffin addressed the board on how they felt about State leadership, encouraging Commissioners to seek legal alternatives including having Sanilac County be governed by a different Governor.
The comments appeared to catch the Board and those in the crowd off guard. Griffin said it is perfectly legal for a County to be governed by another out of state Governor and said she felt Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is who Sanilac County should have to govern them.
She said she intends to follow through with starting a petition and getting the word out that the County should vote to have a different Governor.
Commissioner Joel Wyatt nixed the notion, saying he would never support that concept and went on to say voters in Michigan have the right to vote for a Governor and they did that. If there is a change, Wyatt said it will have to come in the election booth.
