Michigan State Police Investigate Lapeer County Officer Shooting

Family and friends have welcomed home the two Lapeer County deputies who were hospitalized as a result of an officer-involved shooting near Brown City on Wednesday. According to a press release by the Michigan State police following the incident, one of the Deputies was shot and the other sustained non-life-threatening injuries while executing a warrant that resulted in a shootout with the wanted suspect.

Investigators say around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, two uniformed deputies and a detective from the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Willis Road near Brown City Road to locate Robert Charles Raymond, 47, of Imlay City. He was wanted for a felony criminal sexual conduct warrant, according to Michigan State Police. Police say the homeowner was at the residence and allowed deputies to check the premise for the suspect. Upon opening the door of a detached outbuilding, gun fire erupted with the suspect firing at the officers, striking one deputy multiple times. The other deputy returned fire, fatally striking the suspect.

The deputy that was shot was transported to Marlette Hospital and later flown to Hurley Medical Center in Flint. The second deputy was not shot but was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene with no other injuries being reported.

BURNSIDE TWP., MICH.  –  At the request of the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office, Third District Michigan State Police (MSP) Special Investigation Section (SIS) detectives are investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred at a residence on Willis Road near Brown City this morning.

At approximately 9:22 a.m., two uniformed deputies and a detective from the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Willis Road near Brown City Road to locate a wanted suspect, Robert Charles Raymond, 47, of Imlay City, on a felony criminal sexual conduct warrant.

Preliminary investigation indicates the homeowner was at the residence and allowed deputies to check the premise for the suspect. Upon opening the door of a detached outbuilding, the suspect fired upon them with a gun, striking one deputy multiple times. The other deputy returned fire, striking the suspect.

The injured deputy was transported to Marlette Hospital, then flown to Hurley Medical Center for medical treatment. He is listed in stable condition. The second deputy was not shot but is being treated for non life-threatening injuries at a local hospital. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

The incident remains under investigation. MSP was assisted at the scene by the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office, MSP Traffic Crash Reconstruction, MSP Aviation, MSP Forensic Laboratory, Brown City Area Fire Department, Marlette EMS, and Lapeer County Victim Services Unit.
