Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson is reminding residents to stay safe and remain vigilant this Memorial Day weekend.
In a press release sent out Friday morning, Sheriff Hanson says there are two popular activities that can be particularly problematic during the long weekend: fireworks and boating. Every year, area law enforcement responds to late hour noise complaints, property damage and even the occasional firework-related injury. Hanson urges residents who choose to use fireworks this weekend to be respectful of their neighbors and mindful of the dangers involved.
With Memorial Day weekend being the unofficial start of boating and kayaking season in the area, Sheriff Hanson warns that several near-death, and sometimes even deadly, incidents happen each year involving kayakers in rough waters or who are improperly equipped for the conditions.
Kayakers should remember that even though it may seem warm outside, water temperatures this early in the season are only in the low 50s, and even short-term exposure can lead to hypothermia. Hanson says if you do choose to go kayaking this weekend, be sure to wear a life jacket, pack a cell phone in some type of waterproof container, and always tell people where you’ll be headed and when you plan to return.
And of course–be sure to keep a lookout for motorcyclists while out and about driving this weekend.
