While the Sandusky Community School Board of Education had other details to attend to first, Monday night’s special meeting was focused more on whittling down a list of 16 superintendent applicants to five candidates to be interviewed for the role.

Assisted by MASB consultant Rich Ramsey, the board considered all applications in open session on Monday, June 19, at the 6:00 p.m. meeting. With the plan to hold interviews Monday, July 17 and Tuesday, July 18, the board will be interviewing:

  • Bill Kalmar, former superintendent, now interim dean of students at Almont Public Schools;
  • Mike Seaman, Kingston High School’s principal;
  • Jeff Terpenning, Capac Public Schools superintendent;
  • Kurt Dennis, Bad Axe Public High School principal; and
  • Steve Wilson, Bronson Community Schools’ superintendent.

With Kalmar, Seaman and Terpenning scheduled for 6:00, 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. respectively on July 17, Dennis and Wilson will be interviewed the next day at 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. respectively. The board will officially select the district’s new superintendent on July 25th.

Before the candidate screening, the Sandusky Board of Education first voted to approve updates to the elementary school’s parking lot project to the tune of almost $40,000, as well as approving almost $11,000 to build a halfway fence around the school’s ticket booth. The board additionally approved the coming school year’s contract with Chartwells Food Services and the schools’ technology plan.

The board was also introduced to incoming high school principal Ryan Palmer, a Deckerville native and former teacher and coach at Bad Axe Schools. He was hired in May following the announcement that his predecessor, Steve Carlson, would be leaving for Bad Axe’s Huron Intermediate School District as the director of general education.
