A Deckerville man was sentenced earlier this week to six months in jail after fleeing from police during a February traffic stop. 22-year-old Joseph Alan Gillis, Jr was sentenced on August 7, having pleaded guilty in Huron County Circuit Court on June 26.
Gillis, who has had run-ins with the law since he was 19, was driving with a suspended license on February 19, 2023 in Harbor Beach when he was confronted by police and fled. His actions led to him being charged and pleading guilty to fourth-degree fleeing and eluding police, a two-year felony; misdemeanor reckless driving, and misdemeanor driving with a suspended license, subsequent offense.
On Monday, Huron County Judge Gerald Prill handed the Deckerville man 93 days each for the reckless driving and suspended license charges, plus six months for felony fleeing-and-eluding, with those to be served concurrently. It is unclear how or if this sentence will affect the one Gillis is already serving in Sanilac County.
Gillis was sentenced on June 28 to at least one year in prison each for two counts of resisting, obstructing or assaulting police, to run concurrently with a minimum term of 18 months, maximum of 10 years in prison for methamphetamine and ecstasy possession.
