(AREA) — Weather officials say a couple of tornadoes touched down in Michigan’s Thumb region as high winds knocked out power to thousands of homes and businesses across the state last Friday, November 6. A National Weather Service damage survey says that the first tornado hit about 6:46 a.m. Friday near Bad Axe and traveled less than a mile. That EF-0 tornado with estimated peak winds of 85 mph, touched down one mile west of Bad Axe just south of M-53 at Barrie Road. It was on the ground for about one minute. The twister lifted near M-53 and Western Avenue just west of Bad Axe. Two billboards were damaged and a roof was partially torn off. The second tornado touched down about 7:13 a.m. near Sanilac County’s Applegate and traveled more than three miles. The EF-1 twister had estimated peak winds at 90 mph. It struck east of the intersection of Marlette and Loeding Roads. Two barns were heavily damaged by high winds in St. Clair County. DTE Energy says at least 28,000 homes and businesses it serves were without power. Consumers Energy says more than 15,000 of its customers lost service.
