Several inches of snow falls in the Thumb; Sheriff urges motorists to slow down

(AREA) — Parts of Michigan are seeing a bit of lake-effect snow as winter weather takes hold across the state. Since Sunday night in the northwestern Lower Peninsula near Lake Michigan, the National Weather Service says nearly 7 inches of snow was reported in Traverse City; 6 inches fell in Suttons Bay and Interlochen; and 3 inches was reported in Frankfort and Eastport. Winds, meanwhile, are creating lake-effect snow off of Lake Huron in Michigan’s Thumb region. The weather service says Monday morning that up to 4 inches of snow was reported between Port Sanilac and Lakeport. Up to 8 inches is possible in places. Meanwhile, Sanilac County Sheriff Garry Biniecki urges motorists to drive with caution as the road conditions become hazardous. Several accidents have been reported in the county due to snow covered, slippery roadways. Drivers are asked to slow down for the conditions and give yourself extra time when traveling to your destination.
