Spike Lee, Jada Pinkett Smith call for Oscar boycott

NEW YORK (AP) – Don’t look for Spike Lee or Jada Pinkett Smith on the Oscars’ red carpet. Lee and Pinkett Smith say they won’t be going to the Academy Awards next month. For the second-straight year all the acting Oscar nominees are white. In an Instagram post, Lee says he “cannot support” the “lily white” Oscars. Pinkett Smith posted a video message on Facebook, noting it was Martin Luther King Jr. Day. She says “begging for acknowledgement, or even asking, diminishes dignity.” She says it’s time for people of color to ignore the Academy Awards. Pinkett Smith’s husband Will Smith was passed over for an Oscar nod for his performance in “Concussion.”
