Smithsonian giving visitors a virtual look inside Apollo 11

WASHINGTON (AP) – A calendar hand drawn on the wall marking days in space and scribbled warning instructions to not open certain doors. Those are some of the things the public will be able to see as part of a new, 3D look inside the spacecraft that took astronauts on America’s historic 1969 mission to the moon. The Apollo 11 command module is one of the star attractions at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, but visitors who have wanted to look inside have for decades had to content themselves with straining to see through the car-sized craft’s windows. On Thursday, the Smithsonian unveiled a preliminary 3D model of the capsule, which will allow members of the public to peer inside. A more detailed view will be available online this summer.
