Two hurt in crash south of Marlette

(MARLETTE TOWNSHIP) — Two people were injured in a a two-car crash around 6:30 Thursday evening in Sanilac County’s Marlette Township. According to Sheriff’s deputies, a car driven by 70-year-old James Westover of Marlette was traveling south of Marlette on M-53 near the Hilltop Restaurant, when he pulled off the road into a driveway then made a U-turn back onto the highway entering the path of an SUV driven by 60-year-old Joseph Hilt of Kingston. Hilt was pulling a small trailer. The impact caused each vehicle to end up in the ditch on opposite sides of M-53. Both drivers were transported to Marlette Regional Hospital for treatment. Westover was later flown by Lifenet to Beaumont Hospital for further treatment. Police say both drivers were wearing their seatbelts and alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
