LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – The favorite was the winner in the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby. Nyquist is the eighth unbeaten horse to win the Run for the Roses. Nyquist went off at 2-1 and finished 1 1/4 lengths ahead of Exaggerator, who has lost to the Doug O’Neill-trained horse four times. Nyquist stormed into the lead on the turn for home and finished the 1 1/4 miles in 2:01.31. The horse named for Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist paid $6.60, $4.80 and $3.60 as the 2-1 favorite in the full field of 20 horses. Gun Runner was another 3 1/4 lengths back in third. Nyquist delivered a second Derby win for jockey Mario Gutierrez, O’Neill and owner J. Paul Reddam. They were the team behind 2012 Derby and Preakness winner I’ll Have Another. The track was in good condition and the field ran under sunny skies after a heavy rainfall about an hour before the race. The wet weather didn’t stop around 167,000 from attending the race, the second-largest crowd ever at Churchill Downs.
