(PORT HURON) — A Port Huron employee is charged with embezzling more than $60,000 from a union representing city utilities workers. Police say 46-year old Chad Shappee of St. Clair County’s Kimball Township was arraigned Thursday on charges of embezzlement of $50,000 to $100,000 and uttering and publishing. He’s due back in court later this month. Shappee was given a $100,000 personal recognizance bond. The backhoe operator for the city’s utilities division declined to comment after his arraignment, but later resigned from his job. He worked for the city since 1999. Police say he stole from the Utility Workers Union of America Local #532 between June 2008 and April 2015. Shappee was the treasurer of the union local. The theft included 67 checks that were forged and multiple debt/credit card transactions. The felony embezzlement charge carries a 15-year prison term. The two uttering and publishing charges carry penalties of 14-years in prison.
