(BAD AXE) — A community in Michigan’s Thumb region is removing dead and dying ash trees. Eleven ash trees have been removed along one street in Bad Axe over the past two weeks. Three were taken down last Friday. Bad Axe first began removing the trees two years ago due to the emerald ash borer. The Chinese beetle has destroyed tens of millions of ash trees in the U.S. over the past decade. The larval beetle tunnels under the bark, destroying a tree without any sign until its foliage yellows and dies. Bad Axe Mayor Jim Hicks says trees have been taken out “all over the city” and that the city is in talks with horticulturists on what would look best as replacements.
