Three rescued from Lake Huron waters in Port Sanilac as thunderstorms swept through area

(PORT SANILAC) — Sanilac County Marine Division and Uniform Services officers were sent to an area just south of the harbor wall in Port Sanilac around 4 p.m. Monday for a report of three people in the water clinging to overturned kayaks. Deputies, using the department’s patrol boat, rescued two teens, a 15-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl from the water. Before the patrol boat reached the scene, a 65-year-old Port Sanilac man had tried to reach the teens, but his kayak took on water and overturned. He was also rescued by deputies. One of the 13-year-old girls was able to make it back to shore before the patrol boat arrived. Police say a storm with heavy rain and winds quickly came in and turned the kayaks over. The kayakers were all returned to the launch in Port Sanilac where they were met by Port Sanilac Fire and Sanilac EMS. The 15-year-old boy from Oklahoma and the two 13-year-old girls from Oklahoma and Tennessee were taken to McKenzie Health System for treatment of initial onset of hypothermia. Deputies say all parties were wearing life jackets and that the life jackets likely saved their lives.
