Couple with more than 100 dogs in squalor to face trial

(PORT HURON) — A couple in St. Clair County will face trial after more than 100 dogs were found in awful conditions at their home. Michael Higgins and Lynn Higgins are charged with abandoning or cruelty to animals in Cottrellville Township. An animal control officer told a judge Wednesday that a strong odor of animals, urine and feces dominated the home. Judge Michael Hulewicz says the pictures show “filthy, terrible conditions” – plenty of evidence to send the case to trial court. At least 14 dogs were euthanized while many others have been adopted. They were removed from the home in mid-June. Sheriff Tim Donnellon says the couple was breeding, showing and rescuing dogs but “things got out of control.”
