Michigan Corn Growers Association applaud passage of GMO Labeling Bill

(AREA) — The Michigan Corn Growers Association applauds the passage of a bill to create a national standard for labeling of GMO foods by Congress. The legislation was authored by Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow and Kansas Republican Senator Pat Roberts and passed 306-117. Jim Zook, Executive Director for the Michigan Corn Growers Association says the state’s corn farmers thank our members of Congress for passing the bill to prevent a state-by-state patchwork of laws that would raise food prices for consumers and hurt Michigan businesses. He added that farmers are using biotechnology to grow more food on the same land and the bill will create mandatory labels without placing a fear-based stigma on safe, proven technology. Michigan Farm Bureau President Carl Bednarski of Tuscola County says the bill isn’t perfect, but it does reflect a workable compromise that, overall, is in the best interests of the agriculture industry, both nationwide and here in Michigan. The bill now goes to President Obama’s desk for a signature.
