Walker makes it 4-for-4 first-time winners in this year’s majors

SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (AP) – There’s another first-time major champion in men’s golf after Jimmy Walker tamed Baltusrol Golf Club. Walker closed with a 3-under 67 to earn a one-stroke victory over defending champion Jason Day in the PGA Championship. Walker produced three big birdies on the back nine and sealed the win with a 3-foot putt for par on 18 after Day eagled the hole. Walker is the fourth first-time winner in as many grand slams this year. He did it by enduring the longest final day at the PGA Championship in 64 years, playing 36 holes following Saturday’s suspension. Desperate to beat the clock and avoid play on Monday, tournament officials sent the third-round pairings right back out for the final round, meaning Walker was playing the third round as others were playing their last. Walker finished 14-under for the tournament following rounds of 68 and 67 on Sunday. Daniel Summerhays closed with a 4-under 66 to finish third at minus-10, one shot ahead of Brooks Koepka, Branden Grace and Hideki Matsuyama.
