Consumers Energy to install more buoys below dams for safety

JACKSON, Mich. (AP) – Consumers Energy is working with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to install more buoys to help warn the public to stay out of potentially unsafe areas immediately downstream of hydroelectric dams. Last year, Consumers installed buoys at Foote and Cooke dams on the Au Sable River and Croton Dam on the Muskegon River. The unit of Jackson-based CMS Energy Corp. says Friday it’s installing buoys this year at its 10 other dams, which are on the Au Sable, Muskegon, Grand, Kalamazoo and Manistee rivers. A list of sites is posted on the utility’s website. The buoys go across the rivers directly below the dams, where released water can be dangerous to swimmers and boaters. People are asked to stay downstream from the buoys.
