OLYMPICS: Biles goes for gold and Bolt is back

RIO DE JENEIRO (AP) – The U.S. has racked up two more medals with a gold and silver in the Olympic triple jump. Christian Taylor, who is from Fayetteville, Georgia, successfully defended his title while teammate Will Claye finished second, just as he did four years ago. Taylor, who won gold in London in 2012 at 17.81, set the benchmark with a season-leading mark of 17.86 on his first attempt. Biles and Bolt are back in action today in Rio. Biles is American gymnastic Simone Biles who is seeking her fourth Olympic gold in these games. The competition today is in the floor exercise and comes a day after she had to settle for a bronze in the balance beam to go with the three gold medals she has won. Her primary competition comes from teammate Aly Raisman. Bolt is of course Usain Bolt of Jamaica, who is taking part in the opening heats for the men’s 200-meter sprint. He won his third straight gold in the 100-meter on Sunday. The U.S. women’s basketball and volleyball teams have quarterfinal play today. The hoops squad is facing Japan with the winner advancing to the semifinals on Thursday, while the volleyball squad is going up against Japan as well with the winner moving on to a Thursday semifinal. The American beach volleyball team of Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross are playing today for a spot in the gold medal match. The opposition comes from the Brazilian world champions. Walsh Jennings is going for her fourth gold, and Ross is looking to improve on the silver she earned at the 2012 London Olympics. An update look at the medal count shows Uncle Sam’s team with 77. Broken down the U.S. has 27 gold, 24 silver and 26 bronze. China is second with 47 medals overall and Britain is third with 41.
