Gibson leads West Michigan over South Bend 2-1

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Cam Gibson tripled and singled twice as the West Michigan Whitecaps defeated the South Bend Cubs 2-1 on Thursday. Zac Houston struck Roberto Caro out with a runner on second to end the game for his third save of the season. West Michigan started the scoring in the second inning when Gibson hit an RBI single and then scored on a stolen base. The Cubs cut into the deficit in the sixth inning when Vimael Machin hit an RBI single, driving in Matt Rose. West Michigan right-hander Kyle Dowdy (10-2) picked up the win after allowing one run on six hits over 5 2/3 innings. Opposing starter Justin Steele (5-7) took the loss after allowing two runs and six hits over six innings.
