Richmond cemetery setting aside more than 300 plots for pets

(RICHMOND) — A cemetery is making room for pets. The city-owned cemetery in Richmond has an area that’s tough to reach for regular burials. But officials believe it’s suitable for animals, and more than 300 plots could be ready by next spring. Richmond is on the St. Clair-Macomb county line. Reports say plots would cost $300 or $500, depending on residency. City manager Jon Moore says there’s been positive feedback so far. He says the public works department has been working on a proposed pet cemetery for a few years. Donna Shugart-Bethune of the International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Crematories says many pet owners want to honor animals with a formal resting place.
