Area man credited with saving woman’s life during porch fire

(DECKERVILLE) — A Deckerville man is credited with saving the life of a disabled woman whose porch had caught on fire. Just before noon on Tuesday, Deckerville and Carsonville firefighters were called to put out the fire that occurred in the 2400 block of Black River Street in Deckerville.
Sheriffs deputies say the porch caught fire along with a gas grill. The fire spread to the south end of the residence. Firefighters extinguished the fire before additional structural damage occurred.
Prior to first responders’ arrival, Mark Garavaglia observed the fire and was familiar with the woman who resided in the home. He knew that she was wheel-chair bound, and made entry through the back entrance of the home. He then carried her from the burning and smoke-filled home to an area where EMS personnel were able to treat her.
The local Red Cross is assisting the family and the incident remains under investigation.
