Commissioners select two for Veterans Affairs Committee

(Sandusky) – The Sanilac County Board of Commissioners met in regular session Tuesday afternoon to handle issues before them, including filling two vacancies on the Veterans Affairs Committee. Armed Forces veteransDoug Banker, Jeffery Lyall, Loren Thrall and Terrance Wilson all expressed interest in being selected and spoke briefly to the board about their qualifications. Commissioners then voted Banker (four votes) and Lyall (three votes) to the committee. Banker, of Sandusky, is a Korean War veteran who served his country from 1953-1955 and Lyall, of Port Sanilac, served in the U.S. Navy from 1968 until 1971. Both men are active in veteran programs throughout the county.
In other Commissioners news, Sandusky Airport Manager Don Johnson presented information on a proposed Airport Zoning Ordinance. Mr. Johnson recommended a seven member board be named to handle zoning issues regarding height of ground structures in the area of the airport. Johnson told the board, “we are not here to stop windmill projects or large ground structures such as grain systems. But for safety reasons, we need to have zoning in place to protect flight patterns in and out of the airport. Both in Sandusky and possibly Marlette.” The zoning board would consist of one representative from each of the five Commissioner’s districts, a Board of Commissioner member and a representative from the Planning Commission. Johnson hopes to see the new board established within the next six months.
