Fatal accident claims life of Cros-Lex teacher

Monday, Nov. 7 UPDATE – (Buel Township) – Classes at Cro-Lex Schools were cancelled today (Monday) so that students and staff could attend the funeral of Megan Thompson, a math teacher, who was killed in a one vehicle accident on Friday morning. The fatal mishap occurred on Peck Road near Lawndale Road in Buel Township. According to Deputy Bryan Heilig, a mini-van driven by Thompson a resident of Snover, was traveling east on Peck Road along with her 6-year-old son as the only passenger in the vehicle. The vehicle entered the westbound lane of traffic and continued into the ditch, eventually colliding with a tree before coming to rest. The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Accident Investigation Team was dispatched and responded to the scene. Thompson was transported to McKenzie Hospital by ambulance from the scene and was later pronounced deceased. Her son was checked by emergency personnel and was not injured in the accident. An autopsy of the victim was performed with the results still pending. Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted on scene by Elk Township Rescue, Croswell EMS, and the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Accident Investigation Team.UPDATE AS OF 3:07 P.M. – The Sanilac County Sheriff Department has released updated information on Friday morning’s fatal crash involving a Croswell-Lexington high school math teacher.
(Buel Township) – The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a single vehicle fatal accident

that occurred on Peck Road near Lawndale Road in Buel Township. The accident was reported to Sanilac Central Dispatch at approximately 7:13 a.m. Friday morning. According to Deputy Bryan Heilig, a red 2011 Chrysler Town & County, driven by 31-year-old Megan Thompson from Snover, was traveling eastbound on Peck Road along with her 6-year-old son as the only passenger in the vehicle. The vehicle entered the westbound lane of traffic and continued into the ditch, eventually colliding with a tree before coming to rest. The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Accident Investigation Team was dispatched and responded to the scene. Thompson was transported to McKenzie Hospital by ambulance from the scene and was later pronounced deceased. Her son was checked over by emergency personnel and was not injured in the accident. Alcohol use is not suspected as being a factor in the accident, and an autopsy of the victim was performed with the results still pending. Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted on scene by Elk Township Rescue, Croswell EMS, and the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Accident Investigation Team.

(Buel Township) – A 31 year old female, who was a teacher with the Croswell-Lexington school district, passed away in an early morning accident today in Buel Township. Sanilac County Undersheriff Brad Roff said the driver appears to have left the roadway and struck a tree in the area of M-90 and Lawndale Road sometime before 7:30 a.m. The victim was rushed to McKenzie Hospital where she passed away. Accident investigators remain on the scene at this hour. No further details were available.
