(Port Austin) – Huron County sheriff deputies were contacted by the owner of the Port Austin Market located on Lake St. in Port Austin Sunday, advising money from sealed envelopes was coming up missing. According to Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson, precautions were taken for close of business Sunday and later discovered the following day that money envelopes had been tampered with. It was determined that an intruder had been forcing his way into the store. Investigation of the incident led deputies to a Kinde area home, where evidence was uncovered and spurred two search warrants to be sought and authorized. The first was served yesterday at a residence in the 5000 block of N. Van Dyke near Kinde. Deputies also went to a residence on Main St. in Kinde. In the searches, over $700 in cash in marked bills and what police believe to be stolen property was discovered. During the investigation, a 36 year old Port Austin man was taken into custody for parole violations. He is currently being held in jail without bond. Felony charges for breaking and entering are also being sought against him through the Huron County Prosecutor’s Office. The investigations is still under way, with the assistance of Port Austin police.
