County snowplow trucks are ready to go

Bridge repair projects in Sanilac County have come to an end for the season, with work being done on 13 bridges.  Sanilac County Road Commission Engineer Robb Falls told board members at Wednesday’s meeting, the work is more than triple what is normally done in a year. “Usually, we do four or five projects. This year, we had a lot of them that needed work,” he said. “We’ve got culvert work done in anticipation of our 2017 work.”
Falls also said crews will also be hauling limestone to repair parts of Fischer Road before winter sets in. Portions of Fischer Road in the southern part of the county were severely damaged during the waterline project that will eventually connect Lake Huron with the City of Flint. Cost to do the work will be taken from a retaining fee held by the county. The County Engineer said there have been on-going problems with the contractor throughout the project.
In other Road Commission news, board members reported on a meeting held with area dairy farmers and contracted manure hauling companies. Citizen complaints about the lack of dust control and damage being done to paved roads are among the key issues being dealt with by the group. Falls explained, “those rigs are 12 feet wide, wider than some of our paved roads. They are damaging the edges and rolling the pavement when turning corners.”
Falls noted with the winter season fast approaching, crews have been busy preparing the fleet of snowplowing trucks and reports everything is ready to go. “Prices had been pretty high the last couple of years, but have come down this year,” Falls explained. Salt allotments have been delivered to all facilities in the county.
