The City of Yale is looking for a new Police Chief. Monday evening, Mayor Richard Busch did not re-appoint longtime Chief Michael Redman, ending his 10-year career with the city. Mayor Busch appointed Brian Mahaffy, a current Yale officer, as the new Chief however, council was deadlocked in a 3-3 tie vote for the appointment, leaving the city without formally filling the position.
In a strange twist, after receiving advice from their city attorney, council agreed to retain Redman on a daily per diem basis, until a permanent chief can be hired. Redman refused an interview request by WMIC, saying he just wants whats best for the city and doesn’t want to distract from day-to-day operation of the department.
Busch suspended Redman last summer after the Chief had not been wearing his bullet proof vest, but the action was later rescinded, after Redman served a five day suspension.
