Greenleaf Township Trustees, and their lawyer, are considering their options in helping cover costs associated with a lawsuit against the township, located in the northwest corner of Sanilac County. Residents could be asked to pay a tax levy to cover the more than $190,000, or officials could make it part of the general fund with an annual bond over the next 15 years. A payment of $75,000 is due in April and officials believe that money could be part of the bond. The settlement is with former Supervisor Kirk Winter who sued the township last year because of a dispute over licensing for his business.
The township is also facing a second lawsuit by residents Christina Gibbard and Shelly Cook who allege they were assaulted at an October 2016 meeting by Clerk Judy Keller and her husband, Dave.
The Sanilac County Prosecutor’s Office did not file charges after reviewing the case.
