(Sanilac County ) – Michigan State Police troopers and area law enforcement conducted a residence check sweep of convicted sex offenders in Sanilac County this past week. The sweep consisted of officers from the Michigan State Police, Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office, Marlette Police Department, Deckerville Police Department, Croswell Police Department, and Sandusky Police Department. This initiative is an initial residence check sweep to start verification efforts that will be conducted by state, county, and local law enforcement officers throughout 2017.
Once a year, law enforcement is required to verify registered sex offenders at their addresses.
A total of 66 residence checks were completed during the sweep. Ultimately, 49 sex offenders were verified at their residence. Further residence checks will be conducted throughout the year to verify the address of all of the registered sex offenders in Sanilac, Huron, and Tuscola Counties.
The Michigan Sex Offenders Registration Act requires registered sex offenders to regularly report to their area law enforcement agency, sheriff’s office or nearest state police post to verify their address.
Tier 1 offenders must verify their address annually during the month of their birth. Tier 2 offenders must verify their address semi-annually. Tier 3 offenders must verify their address quarterly. Failure to do so carries a penalty of up to two years of incarceration.
All registered sex offenders must also report a change of name, address, employment, campus enrollment, and vehicle within three business days of any change. Failure to do so is four-year felony.
