Firemen clean up bricks after a partial building collapse in Marlette Sunday afternoon
A partial building collapse brought Marlette police and fire personnel to the 3000 block of Main St around 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon, after receiving a report of bricks that had fallen on to a sidewalk and parts of Main Street. The area was closed to pedestrian traffic, and M-53 was closed in both directions, for about four hours while the building was inspected and debris removed.
City Manager Corey Schmidt said there were two upstairs apartments that were occupied and residents were escorted back inside to retrieve personal belongings and have found alternative housing. The building will remain closed until further inspections can be made by the Sanilac County Building Department. There were no injuries or damage reported to structures on either side.
The sidewalk, on the west side of Main St between Marlette and Morris St, will remain closed until further inspections can be made. Businesses on both sides are accessible by rear entrances.
City officials will meet with the Sanilac Building Department, the property owner and discuss what options may be available after further inspection.
