Sheriff Kelly Hanson
M-53 in Huron County’s Colfax Township was closed for over five hours as police investigated a fatal hit and run accident around 2:30 a.m. Friday. According to Sheriff Kelly Hanson, two females were walking along the roadway when they were struck by a SUV. 38-year old Sheila Peruski of Bad Axe was killed in the accident while 21-year old Cassandra Herron of Harbor Beach was treated at an area hospital and later flown to a medical center out of the county.
A third person, 41 year old Christopher Harder of Elkton, was walking a distance behind the two. Police said it appears alcohol played a role with the three. Around 6:30 a.m., Deputies determined an SUV near the accident scene was the accident vehicle, and a 21-year old Bad Axe man was allegedly the accident driver.
The Mercury Mountaineer SUV was impounded and the driver taken to Huron Medical Center for a blood test. He was later arrested and lodged in jail on felony charges for leaving an accident scene which caused death.
The man was expected to be arranged later today after formal charges are authorized by the Huron County Prosecutor. Harder was also arrested on outstanding warrants and was lodged in the Huron County jail.
According to Hanson, other charges stemming from the accident may be filed at a later date.
