Sidewalk project in Sandusky expands

Sandusky City Manager Dave Faber told council Monday night the State of Michigan has agreed to increase the amount of a grant that will allow for new sidewalks in town. Faber said he had a meeting with MDOT officials and learned a proposed sidewalk project on the city’s west side will stretch to the western border of the Walmart property.
The $700,000 project will allow for a new sidewalk on the south side of M-46 from Maple Valley west to the Walmart property and on the north side from Dawson to the Real Video store.
The city’s portion of the grant is $114,000 and the work is expected to begin yet this year.
In other council news, two DPW employees have been hired by the City of Sandusky with second round interviews to be held for the third open spot. City Manager Dave Faber said a part time person has been hired for the summer to help the short staffed department.
Matt Harris was recently promoted to DPW Supervisor, leaving the department in need of additional help.
Faber also told council the city is looking at possibly refinancing seven million dollars in bonds that could save Sandusky nearly two million dollars over 30 years. A finance company is willing to take on the bonds and wants to close the deal by next month.
