Area police departments work to maintain coverage; leadership

(Yale) – Facing a $25,000 deficit, the City of Yale is making cuts to it’s police protection to help balance the new budget.
The news came at their special meeting earlier this week when Mayor Richard Busch reported all contracted union and non-union employees refused to open their contracts to re-negotiate a potential savings.
As a result, after years of 24/7 police coverage, Police Chief Brian Mahaffy has been instructed to schedule his officers to cover 20 hours with a flex schedule
Meanwhile, in Lexington, the revolving door of Police Chief’s in the Village of Lexington has taken another turn, with the hiring of Interim Chief Bill Craft.
He began his duties with the village earlier this month. Craft is a retired officer from Grosse Pointe and replaces former interim chief Neal Rossow, who’d been hired after Chief Ed Jarosz retired last year.
According to village officials, Craft is being paid $30 per hour to work up to 36 hours a week and has applied to become the village’s permanent full-time Chief.
