Saturday afternoon turned tragic for at least one kayaker from the Detroit area. Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson says the victim, 22-year-old Curtis Herbon from St. Clair Shores, and 20-year-old Robert Lapensee also of St. Clair Shores, had apparently swamped their kayaks about a a third-mile from shore near Lighthouse Road in Huron Township around 4:00 Saturday afternoon. Lapensee was able to swim to shore and get help from a passing motorist. Deputies, along with a Coast Guard boat and helicopter responded to the area to search for Herbon who was suspected to have gone down in about 10 feet of water. Authorities used boats, divers, side scan sonar and a drone to search the area and were not able to locate the man. The search was suspended on Monday afternoon because of rough waters. Police say neither of the men were wearing life jackets. The search is expected to resume Tuesday morning and the sheriff says conditions are expected be better for divers and recovery personnel. Sheriff Hanson stressed the importance of wearing a lifejacket and knowing your limits when heading out into open water.
