Rescue crews come to the aid of stranded boaters

Sanilac County Sheriff Garry Biniecki

(Lexington) – A 28-year-old West Bloomfield man called for assistance Saturday on Lake Huron when his 23 foot vessel suffered a mechanical failure and was unable to make its way under it’s own power. According to Sanilac County Sheriff Deputies, Samer Koujane’s boat was taking on water and the bilge pump was unable to keep up. Koujane had called the Coast Guard for assistance and said he was between Lexington and Port Sanilac with 4 people onboard.
Sanilac County Sheriff Deputies searched from Port Sanilac south while Lexington Fire Launched their rescue boat and searched north. The Sanilac County Aero Unit was also called out but was forced to return to base because of unsafe flying conditions.
The Lexington Fire boat then located the craft about 4-5 miles north of Lexington.  A short time later they were joined by Sanilac County Sheriff Deputies and Coast Guard personnel. All four people on-board were found to be uninjured and wearing their lifejackets.
Samer told deputies that, “It was the scariest experience of his life”.  Sanilac County Sheriff Garry Biniecki said, “Even thought there were a few hiccups with the initial information, the actions of the emergency responders working together and coordinating their resources allowed for the quick and effective locating of the vessel”.
