Firemen come to the aid of stranded pooch

Caseville firemen were true heroes over the weekend, saving a poodle from an ice flow
The Caseville fire department saved the day for one local family. Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson said he learned of a very special deed by the Caseville Fire Department Saturday that desderved recognition.
Caseville fire officials said they were made aware of a small family pet stranded on an ice flow on the Pigeon River around noon Saturday. Caseville Fire Chief Ben Willenberg’s wife Dana received a telephone call at their business asking that the Fire Chief help out a little dog stranded on an ice flow.
Willenberg, and members of the Caseville Fire Department, and Caseville Police responded and located the dog on the ice near the Municipal Building in Caseville. Sheriff hanson said he was told at first it was very hard to find the pet, because the white dog blended into the color of ice it was on.
Using an ice rescue suit, a tethered fireman swam a short ways to the poodle which came over to him, scared, cold and shivering. Fire personnel on shore pulled their fellow firefighter and the dog to safety.
While the rescue was taking place, 911 received a call from an elderly lady looking for her dog. It was learned the dog was believed to have wandered off last night. The owner lives near the mouth of the river, which is a little bit of a distance from where the dog was found.
The dog was taken inside of a nearby building and eventually reunited with it’s happy owner. The unidentified owner was very appreciative to fire department members for going above and beyond.
Sheriff Hanson said the residents of Caseville should be very proud of their caring fire department and credited the members with a good save and a happy outcome.
