Despite pleas from fire authorities, residents from throughout the Thumb continue to use burn barrels and in several cases, the burning has resulted in structures catching fire. Last Friday, during the wind storm, four vacant buildings on BayPort Road burned after embers from a burn barrel ignited a fire. Flames consumed a barn, garage and two small structures despite the efforts of firemen from four departments who remained on scene for over three hours. Two other buildings were saved from the blaze.
