(SANILAC COUNTY) – The Sanilac County Road Commission has submitted their list of five most critical bridges in the county to the State of Michigan, in hopes of receiving partial federal or state funding for the projects. Engineer/Manager Robb falls said the list is submitted every year although not all are approved. This year, Falls listed bridges in the townships of Marlette, Bridgehampton, Evergreen, Worth and Elk. Last year, a number of bridge projects, including one over Marlette Road, near M-19, were completed.
(lAPEER) – The City of Lapeer has signed two engineering contracts with Rowe Professional Services for road work on Baldwin Road, totaling nearly $200,000 dollars. The first contract, for around 119,000 is for city street rehabilitation work and a section of Baldwin near M-24. The second contract, in the amount of $73,000, is for a section of Baldwin to be reconstructed, near Taco Bell. The two jobs mean work on Baldwin will be a total replacement of the road, requiring it to be shut down during construction.
In other city commission news, board members approved Lapeer Fire & Rescue trading in used equipment and the purchase of new equipment at the cost of around $45,000. The department will replace their Jaws of Life rescue tools and purchase a new set of airbags. The planned expenditure was in the City’s fire department budget.
(TUSCOLA COUNTY) – In response to the Vassar High School threat last month, the police department is offering a reward of $750.00 to anyone who can help in arresting the individual(s) responsible. Officials were alerted to a threat written in the boy’s bathroom in the main school hallway Friday, April 20th. The incident remains under investigation and police are asking if anyone has information, they are urged to contact the Vassar Police Department or Vassar High School.
(HURON COUNTY) – An early morning four-alarm blaze in Harbor Beach this morning may have been as a result of last week’s wind storm Firemen from Sherman and Sigel Townships and the City of Bad Axe assisted Harbor Beach firemen at the Marathon store on the city’s west side. Firemen responded around 5 a.m. and found metal roofing tangled with power lines. The business sustained smoke and fire damage but no injuries were reported. Firemen remained on the scene for around four hours.
ST. CLAIR COUNTY) – St. Clair County Community College is seeking county voter approval for two proposals on August 7th. The first is a renewal of an existing 0.4591 mills for four years. The proposal was first passed in 1999 and has been renewed every four years. The second is a new tax of 0.5 mills for four years. Each would raise about $2.6 million for the college each year. The measures are intended to maintain and improve university infrastructure and facilities according to school officials.
