(SANILAC COUNTY ) – A 54-year old Lexington resident sustained injuries in a one vehicle accident on Lakeshore Road Tuesday morning in Sanilac County’s Lexington Township. According to the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office, the man was traveling north on Lakeshore when he lost control of his vehicle, entered a ditch and struck several trees. He was treated by Croswell EMS and transported to McLaren Hospital in Port Huron for further treatment. Deputies said the man was wearing a seatbelt and the accident remains under investigation. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash.
(HURON COUNTY) – Two people were injured, one seriously, in a three-wheel bike crash Tuesday evening near Port Hope. Authorities said the male driver of the bike drove through a guard rail near the 7500 block of Lakeshore Drive in Port Hope around 8:30 p.m. The bike flew over the guardrailing and caught fire. The man was flown by FlightCare to an out of area hospital while the woman’s condition is unknown. Port Hope fire department, the Huron County Sheriff Department and Eastern Huron Ambulance responded to the incident.
(TUSCOLA COUNTY) – Although plans were in place for a teacher lay-off in the Cass City school district this upcoming year, school officials have delayed the action, following a protest by the teacher’s union. In the proposed plan, a teacher in the Great Start Readiness Program was facing a lay-off, due to declining student numbers. Michigan Education Association representatives have requested, and been granted, a due process hearing to discuss the matter further before any action is taken on the possible lay-off. The meeting will be held August 16th at 5 p.m.
(TUSCOLA COUNTY) – Contamination at the site of a former Auto and Recycling Center is delaying plans for the new Tuscola County Recycling facility. Questions are being asked by Tuscola County Commissioners as to why the discovery wasn’t made prior to the purchase of the property. Authorities said barrels with contamination were found in more than a dozen areas that need to be cleaned up before relocation is done. Legal counsel has said until the contamination is resolved, relocating the recycling center cannot proceed. Commissioners will meet at 8 a.m. Tuesday to further discuss the issue.
(SANILAC COUNTY) – Lexington police Sgt. Daniel Jonoshie remains hospitalized and is listed in critical condition, according to hospital officials. Police said Jonoshie was returning to Lexington from the Sanilac County jail when the crash happened around 10 am. Sunday. Sandusky Police Chief Brett Lester said the police vehicle was eastbound on Sanilac Avenue with the right of way at Elk Street when the crash occurred. Chief Lester said a 61-year-old Sandusky resident at the intersection failed to yield and turned left in front of the police vehicle. The officer avoided a head-on collision, but lost control on the wet roadway and struck a traffic signal pole. The driver was issued citations at the scene for failing to yield, not having an operators licenses on their person and no proof of insurance. The officer did not have a seatbelt on, according to Chief Lester. The Chief has since said citations issued immediately after the incident have been voided, pending a more thorough investigation.
(HURON COUNTY) – The Huron County Sheriff’s Office, Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board continue their investigation into the cause of an aircraft crash that resulted in the death of a Bad Axe man Monday. Deputies were called to Bad Axe Road, south of the airport in Colfax Township around 5 pm. Investigation showed the plane had crashed into trees 25 feet off the ground and the plane’s pilot, 44-year old Trever Engler of Bad Axe had died at the scene. The Huron County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Bad Axe Area Fire Department, Central Huron Ambulance and the Huron County Medical Examiner’s Office.
