Olson faces additional sex crime charges

FROM THE ST. CLAIR COUNTY SHERIFF DEPARTMENT:
A 60 year old Fort Gratiot man, who was arraigned earlier this month of numerous criminal sex acts, now faces more charges.
Mark Robert Olson appeared this morning for a probable cause hearing on the original charges in 72nd District Court in Port Huron.
Prior to the hearing, prosecutor’s presented the judge with an amended warrant, listing 20 additional charges of first degree criminal sexual conduct. Olson was arraigned on those charges and was denied bond.
Olson first appeared for arraignment in District Court on December 10th.
At that time, he was charged with five counts of first degree criminal sexual conduct and three counts of possession of child sexually abusive material.
The investigation into Olson began in November after the Port Huron Police Capture Program received an anonymous tip regarding Olson’s sex crimes.
That information was passed on to the Port Huron Police Major Crimes Unit (MCU). Members of the MCU were able to determine that Olson resides in Fort Gratiot Township and turned the investigation over to the Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau.
Detectives uncovered multiple criminal sex acts involving Olson between the years 2001 and 2008. The investigation continued after the initial charges were brought. Additional victims were identified, leading to the added charges. All of the crimes Olson is charged with occurred in Fort Gratiot Township and the city of Port Huron.
At the hearing this morning, Olson’s attorney requested a mental competency exam, which was granted. The criminal case will be on hold pending the results of the exam.
Anyone who is a victim of Mark Robert Olson or has additional information regarding his criminal acts is asked to contact Detective Haley Bonner at (810) 987-1728.
