(SANILAC COUNTY) – A Marlette family escaped their burning home Monday night, after embers from a camp fire ignited nearby buildings.
Marlette Fire Chief Dan Korte said the fire was in close proximity to a nearby garage on Wilson Street that caught fire with flames spreading to the home.
Firemen were called to the three-alarm blaze shortly after 10 p.m. and found the garage to be engulfed in flames, according to Chief Korte.
Firefighters from Marlette, along with Burlington and Lamotte Townships battled the fire for more than three hours, pouring over 20,000 gallons of water of the fire including the use of the Marlette aerial truck.
Chief Korte said the American Red Cross assisted the family who had to find alternative housing.
Fire officials say the garage was a total loss while the home sustained heavy damage.
No injuries were reported and the cause remains under investigation.
