(ST. CLAIR COUNTY) – A $38 million reconstruction project along Interstate 69 in St. Clair County began Monday, and a months-long period of single-lane closures in both directions is expected while work is underway.
The Michigan Department of Transportation is rebuilding close to six miles of both eastbound and westbound freeway from M-19 to Miller Road, which borders Mussey and Emmett townships, as well as a section of M-19 from I-69 north to Burt Road in Emmett.
The project is part of a program to revamp state highways and bridges that was announced earlier this year and is expected to be wrapped up by November 2022.
Once road work begins, traffic was expected to be maintained with traffic shifts.
A ramp closure will be required at Riley Center Road through different phases of work, and M-19 traffic will be maintained with a temporary signal.
Some ramp closures may come this summer and a break in construction would take place during the winter months.
A mobile concrete plant will be set up along I-69 by Riley Center to service the rebuilding project with materials.
