Five-county region battles increased COVID numbers

(AREA) – The news of COVID spreading like wildfire in the state, especially in the Thumb Region, continues to make headlines both locally and nationally.
In the tri-county region of Sanilac, Huron and Tuscola counties, there have been more than 10,000 cases of COVID-19 and more than 285 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
In the five-county region of those three counties, along with Lapeer and St. Clair, there has been nearly 30,000 cases and more than 460 deaths since the start of the virus.
In Sanilac County, as of Wednesday, there are 3,185 cases with 84 deaths reported while Huron County has had almost 2,700 cases and 62 deaths.
Tuscola County officials say they have had over 4,150 cases and 139 deaths while Lapeer County is now up to nearly 6,500 cases with over 140 deaths.
St. Clair County health department officials say the county has had more than 12,800 cases with over 300 deaths.
Vaccination clinics continue to be held throughout the region, despite the pause of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine nationally.
