(SANILAC COUNTY) – Nine people sleeping in their home early Tuesday morning managed to escape a house fire in Sanilac County’s Bridgehampton Township, thanks to an alert mom and wife.
Deckerville Fire Chief Tracy Hof said his department was called to the residential fire at the intersection of Ruth and Forester Roads around 3:30 a.m.
Hoff reports seeing heavy smoke coming from the two-story home and said the majority of the blaze was in the attic and roof that had steel over a wood roof, making it difficult to extinguish.
Chief Hoff said the female of the house had been awaken and noticed the fire before alerting her family.
While all nine people managed to escape, firefighters did enter the burning home and saved three family pet dogs.
No injuries were reported and Hoff said the American Red Cross was called to assist the family who also had family members living in Deckerville.
Carsonville fire department assisted Deckerville with crews remaining on scene for four hours.
Fire officials say the cause of the fire remains under investigation but is not considered suspicious.
