Brown City still in running for grant

(SANILAC COUNTY) – There is some good news and bad news for Brown City officials.
The City was notified earlier this year that they were one of 21 communities (out of 304 applicants) that were provisionally awarded a DWAM Grant.
The $600,000 requested by the City was to be used to do a Complete Distribution System Materials Inventory and identify and locate all water mains and lines and determine whether they must be replaced under the Lead and Copper Rule.
However, the City was later notified that EGLE had changed the rules, and now have reduced the amount of the grant to $345,000 in order to make funds available to more grant applicants.
City Manager Clint Holmes says there will still be enough to do the CDSMI and complete 131 main and line excavations, instead of the original 565 requested.
Holmes warned council by saying, “however, the grant has not yet been finalized by EGLE and could change again.”
In other Brown City news, Holmes said the Brown City DPW plans to flush fire hydrants May 10th through May 14th as part of the city’s semi-annual program.
Hydrant flushing will usually take place during the day and residents may notice some discoloration in the water during this process.
Residents are advised not to wash white or light colored clothes during this period.
