(TUSCOLA COUNTY) – An agreement on water supply to the site of the new psychiatric hospital in Indianfields Township, just outside of Caro and on the grounds of the Caro Regional Center, have been worked out, clearing the final hurdle for construction to get underway.
The state will be building a 100-bed facility to replace the current aging 150-bed hospital. The agreement was reached regarding the extended municipal water line from the Caro City limits stretching nearly two miles along M-81.
Sterling Excavating will run the water main along M-81 at a cost of over $1.3 million dollars, according to city officials.
The line will replace the wells and water tower at the Caro Center hospital that have been used since 1914 when the Caro Farm Colony for Epileptics opened, and before the name was changed.
With the water-line issue resolved, construction of the new $63 million, 100-bed state psychiatric hospital will replace the current Caro Regional Mental Health Center outside of Caro on Chambers Road can now start.
The hospital project is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2023.
