MEMORIAL DAY SERVICES/PARADES
Sandusky – Memorial Day services in Sandusky are moving forward and plans call for the service to be held at the Sasnilac COunty fairgrounds on Sandusky on May 31st. Organizers say the parade lineup will take place on Dawson St. and everyone who wants to decorate their entery is welcome to participate in the event. The public will have an opportunity to tour a 5-ton military tactical vehicle presented by the Michigan National Guard. The parade is scheduled to step off at 2:45 with a salute to Navy heroes at 3 p.m. The special day will be capped off by a procession from the fairgrounds to Sanilac Road, proceeding east past the Veteran Memorial on the Courthouse Lawn.
Port Sanilac – After not allowing the public to take part in services last year due to COVID-19, the Port Sanilac VFW Post 8872 will be holding their annual Memorial Day Services Monday, with the following schedule:
9:00 AM at Pine Hill Cemetery
9:15 AM at Ridge Cemetery
9:30 AM at St. John Cemetery
10:00 AM at Washington Cemetery
10:30 AM at St. Mary Cemetery (M-46)
11:00 AM at Port Sanilac Cemetery
Port Sanilac will host the annual Blessing of the Fleet at 11:30 a.m. in th e Harbor.
Croswell – Memorial Day parades and other events will be held in Croswell and Lexington this year, beginning with the Croswell Parade that will lineup shortly before the scheduled 9 a.m. start time. Participants are asked to gather at the intersection of Croswell Avenue and State Street. The parade will head south to the Croswell cemetery for a tribute before heading further south on Black River Road to the Catholic Cemetery for a similar service.
Lexington – later in the morning, parade participants in Lexington are being asked to gather at the Pomeroy Funeral Home parking lot around 10:30 a.m. and be ready to step off at 11 a.m. The parade will head north on Main Street to Dennison Street ending at the Lexington Cemetery. A bugle and rifle salute will be held earlier in the day, beginning at 8 a.m. at the St. Denis Cemetery in Lexington. American Legion officials say over 1,300 flags have been placed in memory of those who gave their life, in cemeteries at Croswell and Lexington.
Marlette – The Marlette VFW will meet at the hall at 6:30 a.m. Monday morning and proceed to the cemeteries. At 11 a.m., they will march from industrial Street south on Maint Street (VanDyke) to the cemetery south of town. Southbound traffic will be stopped while northbound will remain open.
Brown City will be having their Memorial Day parade and other events beginning 10 a.m. May 31st. Event organizers say a service honoring veterans will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery at 10 a.m. The annual parade and ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in downtown have been cancelled for the second year as a precaution due to COVID-19.
Cass City – at 10 a.m. members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will gather on Main Street, near Seeger Street to conduct their annual laying of the wreath at the Cass City memorial sight. The remembrance services will move to the Elkland Township cemetery at 10:30 a.m.. Military honors will be presented, including a laying of a wreath at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by World War II veterans.
There will be a brief service at The Monument in Ruth beginning at 9:45 a.m. while Deckerville will conduct their service at 10 a.m. at the Downing Cemetery. Harbor Beach and Ubly will be having parades and services, beginning at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. respectively while a special service will be held at Rock Falls Cemetery near Harbor Beach beginning at 9 a.m.
