LAPEER COUNTY, Mich. – On Thursday evening around 7:00 p.m., police say a a 29-year-old Flint man attempted an armed robbery/carjacking with a weapon on a female at a gas station in Vienna Township.
The attempt was unsuccessful at which time the suspect took off on foot in the area of 10,000 block of Saginaw St.
Police say the suspect then ran into a business lot where an elderly man was in his 2020 GMC pickup truck with a trailer attached.
A short time later Genesee County dispatch contacted Lapeer County Dispatch and advised that they were working with OnStar to find the vehicle and showed that it was in the north end of Lapeer County.
Genesee County dispatch advised that the suspect was armed and dangerous and had already attempted an armed robbery/carjacking and was successful in another armed robbery/carjacking of this vehicle.
Police say the truck was spotted driving at a high rate of speed southbound and in a reckless manner southbound on M-24 at Sawdust Corners (Lapeer County’s Mayfield Township).
The truck no longer had the trailer on the back and the license plate had been removed, according to police.
Police say the suspect refused to stop when a Deputy attempted to pull him over.
HERE IS A SUMMARY OF THE CRASH ACCORING TO THE LAPEER COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE:
The suspect continued southbound approaching Baldwin Rd. intersection within the City of Lapeer. The suspect had a red light and vehicles were stopped at the red light. The suspect went around stopped traffic entering intersection. The suspect struck a vehicle that was turning northbound on M-24 from Baldwin who had a green light. The suspect vehicle then struck two other northbound vehicles that were stopped at the traffic light on the south side of intersection. Suspect vehicle then rolled multiple times and struck a utility pole on east side of M-24 and came to rest upside down. Suspect was taken into custody immediately and victims were checked by multiple agencies.
There were 4 vehicles involved in crash and 4 occupants total within the three vehicle’s struck. Two of the victims were treated at hospital and released. One of the victims is still in the hospital receiving treatment. The suspect is also still in the hospital and guarded by Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office until he is medically cleared to be lodged in jail. Search warrants were done for toxicology to determine and drugs or alcohol involved.
This investigation is ongoing and Prosecutor Miller will be speaking with Prosecutor Leyton of Genesee County to determine multiple felony charges because of both jurisdictions involvement.
