An EF-2 tornado touched down in Port Austin Saturday evening, uprooting trees and destroying several barns and outbuildings. According to the National Weather Service, the tornado started at 5:49 p.m., touching down just north of the intersection at Port Crescent and Sand roads in Port Austin. It then travelled near the intersection of M-53 and M-25, damaging six homes and removing three roofs, destroying a barn, and heavily damaging two garages. The tornado was about 400 yards wide at its biggest point and reached estimated gusts of up to 120 miles per hour. In all, it travelled about seven miles before stopping at Lake Huron at 6:00 p.m. No fatalities were reported, however six people were injured. The tornado was the most severe of four tornadoes in the state Saturday, with another in Mecosta County and two separate tornadoes in Ionia County.
