(ST. CLAIR COUNTY) – Two elderly people passed away as a result of their vehicle entering the St. Clair River in Marine City and sinking Sunday night.
Shortly after 11 p.m., Marine City Police Officers were made aware of a vehicle driving at an excessive speed east on Broadway Street, according to a press release.
Upon responding to the area, officers were notified that a vehicle was seen floating in the St. Clair River. Investigation determined the vehicle was eastbound on Broadway Street and crashed through the steel guardrails and entered the river.
Witnesses on a boat responded to the car but they were unable to get the occupants out of the vehicle.
The St. Clair County Dive Team and Marine Division and the Algonac and Marine City fire departments responded to the scene and began search-and-rescue measures.
However, after nearly an hour long search, the vehicle was located by divers who then recovered the bodies of an 83-year-old male and an 86-year-old female.
The vehicle was removed from the river by Preferred Towing. Police continue to investigate the incident.
